Individual Assignment Entry 1: The Manager
The ManagerName: George Ma
Age: 27
Designation: Supervisor
Company: Fish & Co. Ion Orchard
Interview
(a) Briefly describe your job responsibilities as a manager.
I'm the supervisor at Fish & Co. Ion Orchard and I'm in charge of handling the operations of shifts, planning the weekly staff schedule as well as making sure that the staff do their jobs well.
(b) What is your management style?
I build a good rapport with my staff and am concerned about their welfare. I feel that this is important as the staff will learn to trust me, resulting in a good working relationship. Although I am on good terms with my staff, I make sure they know when to separate play from work. We can joke and play around outside of work, but during operation times, the staff should be able to handle their own stations and take work seriously. Once the peak-hour is over however, they are allowed to be more relaxed and go for their assigned break times. Before we start on each shift, I will also brief my staff on our goals for the day as well as remind each staff what they should focus and improve on based on previous assessments. This is to ensure that work is more goal-oriented rather than just something to get over and done with.
(c) What are some of the difficulties you face as a manager?
Staff who arrive late for work is one difficulty and I'm quite particular about this as one late staff would mean a shortage of manpower for the peiod of time that he or she is late. Sometimes I also have problems with planning the schedules as some of the staff are unable to give me their schedules on time, or do not even give me their schedules at all.
(d) How do you overcome these difficulties?
I brief and have a talk with the staff if there's a need to. I find that when I have to be stern with them, I will not hesitate to do so. Although I am generally on good and friendly terms with my staff, if things comes to a point where I have to assert some authority to instil discipline into them, I will do just that.
(e) In your opinion, what makes a good manager?
Managers should be able to understand their staff. Should they have any problems, the staff should feel comfortable in approaching their managers. Most importantly, managers should be able to click with the staff as it will be very difficult to handle their shifts otherwise. I feel that a good manager should also know how to balance between being friendly to his or her staff with being stern and assertive in order to get things done as maintaining the company's interests is still the main priority.
Identified Management Style(s)
- Mainly Human Relations School of Management coupled with hints of Classical School of Management and Modern Approaches to Management.
Analysis
- By placing emphasis and focus on building a good rapport with his staff, maintaining friendly terms with them, and being concerned about their welfare, George mainly employs the use of Human Relations School of Management in his management style.
- However, he balances this with the Classical School of Mangement by knowing when to be stern and assertive with his employees in order to instil discipline in them and get things done properly.
- George also exhibits the usage of Modern Approaches of Management through Management by Objectives (MBO) by briefing his staff on the goals set for both the company and them as well as giving them reviews of their previous work performances before starting on a shift.
